Our Natural Surroundings

In any season, end the day watching the brilliant sunset from the porch of your mountain home. At bedtime, let the mountains demonstrate the true meaning of dark and peaceful as an orchestra of crickets and katydids perform a symphony just to lull you asleep.

Several of our communities have stocked lakes tucked away in valleys just for those who enjoy spending a day fishing. You may fish from a non-motorized john boat or just sit on the bank and cast your line into the water. Many of the local trout streams are nationally ranked for their excellent fishing. One of our most remote communities offers one of the few remaining streams which is home to native brook trout.

The Ellijay, Ocoee, and Toccoa Rivers are excellent for rafting and canoeing, or just taking a summer dip. For the more subtle water activities, the lakes offer a place for paddle boats or for a Saturday afternoon swim.

As more people take up the sport of mountain biking, we see many enter the area with bikes in tow. Our community roads, with very light automobile traffic, offer an excellent place for biking, as do the trails that border the properties. For the more avid biker, the Rich Mountain and Cohutta Mountain National Game Reserves offer excellent locations for off-road biking trips.

For those who prefer to explore on foot, roadways and trails are available in all Sisson communities. A portion of the renowned Benton MacKaye Trail winds its way through the Cherry Log Mountain and Laurel Ridge. This trail is part of the Appalachian Trail system and can be followed to the Appalachian Trail’s end point in Maine. A trail shelter is located below the waterfalls on Indian Rock Lake. The section of trail which passes through the Sisson communities follows beautiful creeks lush with native flora and fauna, as well as mountain ridges which offer stunning panoramic views.

Should you have a large group to entertain, Cherry Log Mountain is the site of an enclosed pavilion that is complete with barbecue pit, kitchen area, picnic tables, rest rooms, and outside games such as horseshoes, basketball, and badminton. A play set is available for the younger generation. The pavilion is available to all for a nominal charge and deposit.

The Chapel on Cherry Lake is also available for small weddings or church services. Many have had a wedding ceremony in this lakeside chapel, then used the pavilion for the reception.

Our Lake Buckhorn community is just the ticket for those who seek an exclusive mountain retreat with the rustic edges sanded-off just a bit. Lake Buckhorn features wide, paved roadways and a three-mile hiking trail with a unitque wetland boardwalk, all within the property.

We at Sisson Company have worked to make available as many amenities as possible without interfering with the privacy and quiet of the mountains. So come on up, get ready to relax and
